Restoration of Yore
Mill Hydro Electric
Yore Mill is a four-storey,
Grade II listed building built in 1784. It is of considerable
historical interest being one of the earliest examples of ‘industrialisation’ in
a rural setting. With its two rows of cottages, millers hose,
stables, cart sheds and smithy it is perfectly preserved. Its
situation made great use of the river, the adjacent pathway
and footbridge, originally built in 1539 for packhorses.
Of these, most importantly
was the water flow of the River Ure that runs alongside. Water
is drawn from the river by way of a stone race at the Upper
of three large waterfalls. It was channelled to pass behind
the Mill and turn a waterwheel that drove the mechanisms within
the building. The site is overlooked by St. Andrews, a medieval
church site dating from 1,000 AD.
Originally, the Mill built
by the Birkbeck family from Settle, Yorkshire was used as a
cotton mill. In 1852, the Mill burned down and the interior
destroyed. It was rebuilt the following year, an extra storey
high and twice the original length and width.
|
The
upper storeys were used for carding and spinning of
knitting yarn, this finished in 1870. The lower storeys
were used for corn grinding and this continued until
after the last war. The Mill was converted in 1912
into a flour rolling plant and in 1937; the water wheel
was removed and replaced by two Gilkes and Gilchrist
water turbines that are still in situ. The latest milling
machinery was installed. Flour production ceased in
1958 and the Mill used as a cattle food depot until
it changed ownership in1969.
The building
was then used to house a collection of horse-drawn carriages
and was known as the Yorkshire Carriage Museum. The collection
has now been moved but the present owners intend to restore
and re-open the building, particularly the roof that
after 200 years is showing signs of wear and tear. A
restoration fund is being set up so that the turbines
can be restored and put on view and the mill wheel replaced. It
is a perfect wet weather area. At present, fund raising
activities take priority and any donations at all will
be gratefully received.

The dramatic waterfalls, beautiful woodland and historical interest
of this corner of Wensleydale attracts many many visitors. Because
of the rich natural history of Freeholders Wood it has now been
designated a site of special scientific interest and is a nature
reserve. Hazel dominates much of the woodland but a number of other
trees grow there including Holly, Ash, Wych, Elm, Oak and Rowan.
Over 120 species of flowers are recorded there. In spring, the
woodland floor is decorated with a carpet of blue-bells studded
with purple orchids. Adjacent is St. Josephs Wood, newly planted
woodland of 11,500 broadleaved trees that is set aside for the
conservation of wild life cut can be traversed by a public footpath.
